      Island Rab

RAB, Island of Sunshine, the Sea and Beauty, is one of the islands of the North-Adriatic archipelago. Rab belongs to the Kvarner group of Adriatic Islands. It is separated from the mainland by a short 20 minute car ferry ride.

HISTORY.. During the centuries Rab is charming and attracting visitors from all around the world. The town of Rab is the most interesting place, with the characteristic four church bell towers. Squares with tall belfries, churches, Palaces with old portals and Mediterranean streets speak million voices in million languages, because the hosts have opened the harbors and the gates of their beautiful island to every good-hearted person. It has every right to be called a museum-town, as every stone and every building are monuments from a certain period in history. Early Greek and Roman geographers wrote about the beauty, as well as the strategic value of the Island, and the Island was given the title of Roman municipium - Felix Arba, by Roman emperor Octavian Augustus in the year 10 b.c.

THE OLD TOWN OF RAB.. is known for it's Romanesque squares, tall church tower bells, numerous historic churches, palaces, a city council forum and plentiful small Mediterranean streets spreading like a spider's net. The Island and town were recognized by European aristocracy in as early as the 19th century and with this recognition, the development of tourism began on the island, based primarily on private accommodation, apartments for rent (ferienwohnungen or ferienhaus für Miete)as well as numerous camping sites outside the town of Rab,and hotels closer or inside the town. Outside the main city walls lies park Komrcar which with its representative examples of Mediterranean horticulture. Tourism in Rab goes back to the 19th century. But Rab got its spot on the map when the British King, Edward VIII stayed there with his great love, the American Wallis Simpson. They say that he was the first to go swimming without any clothes. This is how nudism (naturism) was founded on Rab (nudist beaches here have the German label FKK or Freikörperkultur - Free Body Culture). They are: Island Maman in Supetarska Draga, Kandalora in Suha Punta, Mirine and Ravnice in Barbat, and Stolac, Sahara and Ciganka in Lopar).

CLIMATE.. The island of Rab has a pleasant Mediterranean climate, warm summers and mild winters. Average annual temperature varies between 7 °C in winter and 26 °C in summer, remaining above 18 °C for more than 140 days a year. The average temperature of the sea around the island is 24 °C in summer and 12 °C during winter. With average of 104 days of sunshine a year, and 9 cloudy days during summer, Rab ranks among the sunniest parts of Europe.

"Rapska Fjera" - Days of the Middle Ages festival - July 25.,26. & 27.. Click here !

RAPSKA FJERA.. "Rapska Fjera" is a historical reenactment celebration lasting for 3 days during Dies Natalis of St. Christopher (patron saint) on island Rab Croatia. Fjera (fair) includes the Medieval festival of crafts and customs and Archers' crossbow tournament. It is held on the streets of the oldest part of the Town of Rab. Visitors can enjoy observing traditional crafts, pottery, painting, fishing, coinage, stitching, basket weaving, carpentry, sculpting or learn the secrets of trade from the florists, honey makers, herbalists or even from the cross-bow archers who are happy to explain the technique and the history of the crossbow. One can see the traditional medieval household, women rippling wool, weaving, grain grinding, bread making and hear traditional gang song. Fjera has been modeled after the holidays (tempus feriarum 14 ct.) in past but has been shortened to only 3 days celebration in comparison to a whole week Fjera in the Middle Ages. The celebrations were held in honor of King Louis the Great (Louis I of Hungary) who liberated Rab commune from Serenissima and lasted for a whole week around the holy days of St. Jacob, St. Anne and St. Christopher, culminating with the knight's tournament. In those times Rab truly became Happy town or Felix Arba (Roman honorary title given to deserving municipium).

Nowadays during these 3 days (25, 26th & 27th July) people dress up in costumes and have open air workshops of the medieval life. The streets are run over with ladies, gentlemen, medieval guards with prisoners. The main feature is of course the Crossbow Arbalest Archers Tournament. First tournament was held in 1364. where the winner would compete for the rich prize - a house or gold to live on for a whole year. The festival culminates with the parade and the crossbow archers tournament on the St. Christopher's square and includes cannon fireworks....Other events in 2011..
